Structural color in Morpho butterflies was firstly discovered 130 years ago,but finally interpreted correctly after the invention of the electron microscope in 1980s.Now,it is commonly believed that the iridescent blue color is attributed to the multilayer interference from the complex hierarchical nanostructures on their wing scales.This unique nanostructures lead to an extraordinary characteristic,which seems to be incompatible in traditional structural color [1].More novel applications have been exploited,including optical gas sensors,efficient solar cells,anti-counterfeiting labels,and high-speed infrared imaging devices [2].
