Growth cannot come with a negative impact on the environment.Worldwide, pressure for companies to become more environmentally responsible is mounting.CEM is aware of the impact that its activities have in the development of Macau and in the well being of its population and,as a socially responsible organization,is strongly committed to minimize the environmental impact of its activities and to be a proactive partner of the Macau community.Over the past years,CEM has invested more than MOP450 million to improve CEM s environmental performance in line with community expectations, including our high investments in Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems,Wastewater Treatment Plants,Natural Gas Conversion Project,Air Quality Monitoring Systems,Scrap Yard and Noise Control Facilities...etc.The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology is a catalytic process that was developed and utilized to reduce the emissions of Nitrous oxides (NOx) of large coal or oil fired utility plants mainly. The first attempt to apply the SCR technology on the world largest diesel engine power plant had been successfully implemented on stationary two stroke low speed diesel generators of Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM) as a retrofit solution to control its emission, despite the complexities involved in retrofitting of existing power plant and the lack of any previous proven track record of such application. The effort to reduce the activity impacts has been translated in significant improvements with measurable performance indexes. The SCR implementation can be regarded as a milestone in addressing the environmental issues faced by operators of similar power plant in the region.
