The purpose of this presentation is to show how Swedish physics Ph.Ds at the turn of the century 1900 managed to introduce new elements of teaching practices in secondary schools.Inspiration for this process came from both practice-oriented realist pedagogy strongly influenced by pragmatism and from a well-established experimentalist research tradition in Swedish physics.By combining pedagogical conviction and research tradition, they managed to introduce laboratory work in Swedish secondary school education. In addition, access to lab equipment promoted efforts of individual teachers to pursue careers as secondary school teachers. This study thus shows how research practices as well as pedagogical perspectives in higher education can be important when understanding development of education also at lower levels such as secondary schools. In conclusion, the diffusion of higher-education ethos is an important vehicle for change throughout the educational system.
