In CFD simulations, the smaller the cell size is, the more accurate the result is.However, a smaller cell size in all simulation regions means much more cells which in turn increased the consumption of the simulation time greatly.Adaptive mesh refinement technology chooses appropriate domains to use fine cells while coarse cells for others.Therefore, it could not only obtain decent simulation accuracy in locally refined parts, but also greatly reduce the total number of cells.In addition, the actual effects of local refinement are directly related to the mechanism of deciding the refinement position.This paper proposed a group of simple and effective flow-based dynamic refinement algorithms which are implemented in OpenFOAM CFD tool box.What is more, this paper takes the typical experiments that viscoelastic flow (Oldroyd-B model) pasting a cylinder as an example for validation.The simulation results show that adaptive mesh refinement could obtain decent accurate results with much less cells compared with the one with uniform mesh.Besides, comparisons are made between three flow-based adaptation parameters (the gradient of the velocity, the gradient of the pressure and the the polymer stress) and it seems that the gradient of the pressure perforrms better in capturing essential domains in this case.At last, the influence of the selection of the threshold is investigated systematically.
