The objective of this study was to explore the restoration and succession process of degraded grassland in the loess plateau of China.fence was used to restore the degraded grassland, many fixation quadrats were established in different plant communities.Vegetation characteristics, litter, root systems, soil seed bank, soil water content and mowing disturbance were analyzed. The main results were: (1) species coverage, height, density, biomass and species diversity significantly increased with fence time extending; (2) root system, soil seed bank, soil water content and disturbance had a significantly changes in the succession process; (3) grassland succession process could be divided into five stages.Fence is the most effective way for vegetation restoration of degraded grassland in the Loess Plateau. After 10-15 years, the restoration grassland could be considered utilization for developing animal husbandry by grazing and mowing.
