Leaf physiognomy is climate-sensitive and used for quantitative climate reconstruction by applying leaf-climate correlations. The most common leaf physiognomic methods are leaf-margin analysis and leaf-area analysis, whichare univariate approaches.Multiple linear regression models and other multivariate analysis methods are also applied. However, Most studies focus on site-level means of species sets in large-scale environments. The sensitivity of leaf physiognomy to habitat microclimate within species is poorly known, which limits our understanding of leaf-climate relationships and applications to climate proxiesfor forest monitoring.
