Gel-grown method has been used to synthesize polymer/single-crystal composites where single-crystals incorporate large amounts of gel networks and nanoparticles. In this work,we extend the gel crystallization to incorporate yeast into calcite single-crystals.We demonstrate that the crystals incorporate the yeast cells and gel fibers when grown in agarose gel media containing the cells, while the solution-grown crystals do not. With both gel fibers and the cells incorporated inside, the crystals do not lose their long-range order.Further work will be focused on the cell behaviors inside the dense single-crystal matrix.
