Although maternal effect genes play critical roles in early embryogenesis, their molecular functions in mammals remain largely unknown.Using mouse genetics and biochemistry, we have identified a mammalian-specific subcortical maternal complex (SCMC) essential for mouse pre-implantation development. As a continuing study, we now show that TLE6 is required for the stability of the SCMC and is necessary for cleavage beyond the two-cell stage of development.
