It has been hypothesised that consistent interindividual differences (CIDs) in energy metabolism might produce CIDs in physiological and other behavioural characteristics. The resting metabolic rate (RMR), which represents the minimal level of maintenance for an individual, appears to be linked to various physiological and behavioural traits.Empirical studies suggest that individuals with a high RMR are at an advantage under favourable conditions because they digest food rapidly and exhibit a greater growth potential.
