In comparison, MF splits electronic levels contributed collectively from electrons localized in ions, which has been termed Zeeman effect that can be probed by optical spectroscopy.Trivalent rare earth ions with their rich 4f levels are ideal candidate ions for the study of this magnetic-optical interaction.Among RE ions, Eu3+ has been frequently used as a luminescence probe ion as its 5D0→ 7F2 transition is hypersensitive to the site symmetry.Herein, notable shift in the position of emission bands in MF for Eu3+ doped hexagonal NaYF4 nanocrystals is observed for the first time.Furthermore, the luminescence bands were suppressed gradually with the applied MF and the suppression of the emissions from the higher 5D1 state is stronger than those from the lower 5D0 state. These observed magnetic-optical interactions are explained in terms of MF induced Zeeman effect, enhanced cross-relaxation rate and change in local site symmetry in MF.These observations suggest that Eu3+ doped NaYF4 nanocrystals might have potential applications for remote MF sensing in nanoscale region.
