To define the effects of the 3-daidzein sulfonate (DSS) on the bone and lipid metabolism in ovariectomized rats.The rats were respectively given matched amounts of saline, DSS (0.3, 1.0 mg/kg) or estradiol valerate (0.8 mg/kg) for 6 weeks.Its showed that DSS significantly decreased Lees index, increased high density lipoprotein (HDL), and reduced low or very low density lipoprotein (LDL, VLDL), triglycerides (TG),or cholesterol (CHO) in serum.On the other hand, it decreased bone gla proteins (BGP) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (STrACP), but increased alkaline phosphatase (AKP) levels in serum, accordingly improved bone formation and resorption in postmenopausal osteoporosis.These findings indicate that DSS is effective in preventing bone loss and reversing the unfavorable changes of lipid metabolism in this model.It may represent a potential alternative therapy in bone loss and lipid metabolism abnormality in ovarian hormone-deficient women.
