The precipitates in Al-Mg-Si and Al-Mg-Ge (0.43 at.% Mg-0.2 at.% Gebalanced in Al) alloys were compared using by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) to understand their precipitation sequences.Solution-heat treated alloys were aged and their microstructures wereobserved HRTEM for samples aged atdifferent aging conditions.it was possible to observe that G.P.zones, random type precipitates, parallelogram type precipitate and β" phase in Al-Mg-Ge alloyin under-aged and peak-aged conditions. And βphase, type-A precipitateand equilibrium phase β-Mg2Si were observed in over-agedcondition.This sequence is mostly similar to that in Al-Mg-Si alloy, but, there is significant difference between 2 alloys. In this talk, these results will be introduced with the effect of additional minor elements on precipitates in those alloys.
