Hepcidin is a peptide hormone that is synthesized mainly in the liver.Hepcidin negatively regulates serum iron by controlling iron absorption from diets and iron release from macrophages.Genetic studies have revealed that three proteins, i.e.HFE, Tfr2 and hemojuvelin [HJV] are critically involved in regulation of hepcidin expression in hepatocytes.
