We have previously reported that infection of mice with Theilers routine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) induces vigorous IL-6 production in glial and dendritic cells.Virus-infected microglia and DCs preferentially promote the differentiation of Th17 cells, which are pathogenic for the development of TMEV-induced immune-mediated demyelinating disease (J.Exp.Med.206:313, 2009).One of the key pathogenic mechanisms of Th17 ceils is the inhibition of apoptosis of virus-infected target cells by Th1 7-produced IL-17, which leads to increased viral production and persistence.
