The role of monoamine and relative receptors in motion sickness

  Sea sickness (SS)has great negative impact to the mental and physical state of workers on the sea.The vestibular nucleus (VN) is the first station of vestibular information transmitted to the central neural system,which plays an important role in the pathway of equilibrium and converging directly or indirectly the non-vestibular stimulation information from posture,eye and viscera.Recently,pharmacological experiments have demonstrated that some agonist or antagonist of 5-HT receptors can inhibit the symptoms of motion sickness.And motion or caloric vestibular stimulation can enhance the concentration of 5-HT in the VN.So the 5-HT and its receptors may be involved in the development and adaptation process of the SS.In present study,the changes of 5-HT receptors mRNA expression in rats VN and changes of monoamine in brain stems was demonstrated,after motion stimulation in the 1 st,3rd,7th and 14th day,by RT-PCR,Real-time PCR and HPLC-ED methods,respectively.
