A high-performance liquid chromatographic method was developed to determine varietal differences in terpene lactone and flavonoid levels of 36 ancient Ginkgo biloba individuals from 19 provinces in China.Results showed that contents of terpene lactone and flavonoid gradually increased from April to August, and thereafter declined.Terpene lactone content in individual No.72 (Xingan, Guangxi), 58 (Youyang,Chongqing), and 123 (Huixian, Gansu) were of superior quality compared to the other individuals.Approximately individual No.72, 58, and 82 (Ruao, Jiangsu) showed high levels of flavonoids.Cluster analysis showed that individual No.72, 58, 82, 123, 99(Dujun, Guizhou), and 133 (Mentougou, Beijing) had higher terpene trilactone and flavonoid content.This study provided clues for determine suitable season for harvesting Ginkgo biloba leaves and select excellent individuals.
