To describe the collision of elastic-perfectly plastic spheres, Thornton[1] proposed an simplified theoretical model by dividing the collision into four stages, namely elastic loading, yield, plastic loading and elastic unloading.Further more, relation of coefficient of restitution with pre-impact velocity was derived.However, we fmd the assumption of change of contact curvature when reaching max loading and the collision entering the stage of elastic unloading questionable.A modified theoretical model, in which the curvature keeps unchanged when turning into elastic unloading stage, is proposed in this paper.
