Myeloid leukemia is a hematopoyetic disorder in which the fusion protein Bcr-Abl is expressed. This protein shows a constitutive tyrosine kinase activity and activates cell signaling pathways that lead to cell survival.Tumor cell death induced by chemoterapeutic agents occurs mainly by apoptosis and resistance to this process is one of the basic mechanisms of therapy resistance. It has been demonstrated that Bcr-Abl protein activates the transcription factor NF-kB, a critical apoptosis modulator, since regulates a variety of genes implicated in proliferation and cell survival.Furthermore, NF-kB is strongly implicated in a variety of hematologic malignances and a constitutive activation of this factor was detected in these neoplasias and it probably plays a central role in determining resistance to therapy.
