Fubao Bay lies in the northeast part of Dianchi Lake with highly polluted by contamination input from the Daqing and Haihe rivers, and hyper-eutrophication and algae blooming appeared in this bay.An experiment was carried out to study the effect of external sediment capping on NH4 +-N and PO43--P releases from the polluted sediment of this bay using static incubations of intact sediment cores. The external sediments used had lower contents of phosphorus, organic matter, microbial activity and alkaline phosphatase activity compared to the original surface sediments. The incubation results showed that the sediment, whether capping or uncapping, was the source of NH4 +-N and PO43--P for the water. The NH4 +-N and PO43--P fluxes of the uncapped sediment ranged from 163.1 to 197.1 mg · m-2 · d-1 and 2.6 to4.2 mg · m-2 · d-1,respectively.The external sediment capping made the fluxes to decrease to 36.3 to 129.5 mg · m-2 · d-1 and 1.1 to 2.0 mg · m-2 · d-1,respectively.The results suggest that external sediment capping might be useful in reducing internal nutrient loading from the sedime(n)t in Fubao Bay in short time, but the long-term results of capping are as of yet unknown and require further research.
