Non-metallic inclusions are considered to play an important role on the quality of steel products.Effect of non-metallic inclusions on the quality of steel products is determined by its state in the final products after various thermal and mechanical treatments as well as its state during refining and casting. In this study, solid state reaction between Fe-based alloy and oxide was investigated by using a diffusion couple in order to clarify the mechanism of reaction at the interface.Diffusion couple consisted of the steel and oxide, those are in equilibrium at steelmaking temperature, and it was heated at a temperature above 50 K higher than the liquidus temperature of oxide phase to contact oxide with solid steel. After that the diffusion couple was heated at 1 473 K for various time and quenched.A cross section of interface between the steel and the oxide was analyzed using an EPMA and SEM- EDS.As results, the diffusion of elements between the steel and the oxide, phase transformation of the oxide, and formation of particles in the steel were observed near the interface. The mechanism of the reaction between the solid steel and the oxide is discussed.
