By utilizing a 3D cell culture model for KSHV-infected lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) we recently showed that KSHV reprograms lymphatic endothelial cells into a mesenchymal, invasive cell type via endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition.Transcriptome analysis of the KSHV-reprogrammed cells revealed substantial enrichment of invasion related genes including matrix metalloproteinases MMP14 (gene for MT1-MMP) and MMP1 with a concomitant decrease in PROX1, the master regulator of lymphatic cell fate, expression.
