ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To report our experience with computed tomography (CT)-guided cutting needle biopsy of retrotracheal lesions by using the transtracheal approach.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records of 8 consecutive patients who underwent CT-guided cutting needle biopsy of retrotracheal lesions were evaluated retrospectively.A 18-gauge cutting needle technique by transtracheal approach was used in all patients.Medical records were reviewed for lesion size and location, needle path, number of needle penetrations, biopsy results, and complications.RESULTS: The transtracheal approach biopsy was successfully used in all of 8 patients with retrotracheal lesions.Major blood vessels, nerves and thyroid glands were avoided in all patients. All patients experienced less discomfort during penetration of the permeating the tracheal and injection of the anesthetic. No major complications were encountered.Minor complication was hoarseness in one patient but disappeared spontaneously without any clinic treatment after three days.CONCLUSION: The CT-guided cutting needle biopsy by using transtracheal approach allows safe access to masses in various locations in the retrotracheal lesions.
