我国的世界史学者无不知道周一良、吴于廑主编的《世界通史》(四卷本),这是60年代初问世的新中国第一部综合性的世界史著作。它比较系统地叙述了世界从人类起源到第一次世界大战结束的历史,体现了中国学者当时对世界史的认识和研究水平。这部通史在培养新中国一代世界史学新人方面功不可没。时隔20余年,年逾古稀的著名教授吴于廑和齐世荣教授共同接受国家教委的重托 The scholars of world history in our country all know the “General History of the World” (four volumes) edited by Zhou Yiliang and Wu Yutun. This is the first comprehensive new book of world history in China that came out in the early 1960s.
