Lucien Goldman (1913-1970) insisted that Lukacs made a sociological criticism of Pascal’s and Racine’s work and further identified some of the French Revolution from the Ransen movement The origin of wisdom. Recent research not only adjusted the romantic image of Pascal built by Goldman, but also pointed out that the Ransen movement actually contributed to a continuously changing social movement. Goldman explores how literary works present the worldview of social groups that play a crucial historical role such as the European “middle class” of the 17th and 18th centuries. Although his empirical analysis needs to be further amended, the issues raised by the above methodology have so far been valid.
