AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is an evolutionarily conserved metabolic sensor crucial for the cellular energy homoeostasis.In response to reduced energy supply,AMPK switches off Adenosine-5-triphosphate (ATP)-consuming pathways,including those for fatty acid synthesis and gluconenogenesis,and activates ATP-generating pathways,such as fatty acid oxidation and glycolysis.
