Objective: To conduct a pilot clinical trial,to assess the effect of chewing sugar-free gum (SFG),parceled with Simotang (SSFG),a traditional Chinese mixed herbal medicine, known for treatment of gastrointestinal disorders,on the recovery of bowel motility, and the enhancement of lactation after caesarean section (C-section),in preeclampsia patients. Methods: 190 pregnant women, including 34 preeclampsia patients, were randomly divided into SFG and non-gum che-wing (control) groups. The time of first flatus, defecation, lactation, and the serum motilin level after caesarean section, were monitored and compared between the two groups. We also recruited 17 preechanpsia patients, and tested the effect of chewing SS-FG on the recovery of bowel motility, and the enhancement of lactation after C-section.Result: The data obtained from 190 cases showed that chewing SFG after C-section can significantly accelerate their fla-tus,defecation,and lactation, compared to the control group. However,in preeclampsia patients,no difference was found in the SFG group versus the control group. Our pilot study with SSFG,in the additional 17 preeclampsia patients showed that the bowel motility and lactation were significantly enhanced compared to either SFG or the control groups.Allthe patients received SFG and SSFG appeared to tolerate the drugs well, and no significant complications or side effects were observed. Conclusions: In general, chewing SFG is an effective, inexpensive, simple, and well-tolerated treatment to improve the bowel motility and lactation after C-section.While chewing SFG appeared to have diminished effects in the preeclampsia pa-tients,chewing SSFG may improve the bowel motility and accelerate lactation after C-section in the preeclampsia patients.
