The use of liquid resin manufacturing processes such as resin transfer molding (RTM) and vacuum assisted RTM (VARTM) has developed rapidly for aerospace applications in recent years. These processes will be used more extensively in the future because large and complex parts can be manufactured economically.Despite the attractions of liquid infusion processes there are challenges due to the limitations of the resin systems available.Henkel has developed a family of Benzoxazine liquid infusion resins to address the needs of the aerospace industry which provide ease of processing, higher performance and supply chain improvements. The resins can be shipped and stored at room temperature and they are approved for air shipment simplifying the supply chain. The heat of reaction of the Benzoxazine resins is lower than state of the art systems resulting in a long pot life and safe manufacture of large parts due to reduced risk of exotherm. All the Benzoxazine resins can be processed using vacuum only (VARTM) infusion and cure, allowing the use of cost effective tooling and part manufacture. The family of resins provides a range of elevated service temperature performance and toughness which expands the design envelope and enables reduction of finished part weight. The cured Benzoxazine resin technology also affords other benefits such as low flame, smoke and toxicity, and improved UV resistance. These multiple attributes give the aerospace user economic improvements throughout the value chain.
