A new organic-inorganic hybrid silica membrane has been developed with high chlorine tolerance for desalination by reverse osmosis (RO).Bis(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTESE) is used as the silica, precursor to prepare the selective layer via a sol-gel process. The BTESE-derived membranes exhibit a high rejection (> 98%) for 2000 ppm NaCl under 11.5 bar and 25 ℃.Moreover, the membranes show excellent chlorine tolerance under various chlorine concentration. The hybrid silica membranes promise a broad range of applications in water treatment by reverse osmosis.
