Background The central event in the process after optic nerve injury is a progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs).It is widely accepted that apoptosis is the way by which RGCs die.Recent evidence shows that autophagy is activated in RGCs following optic nerve transaction, which may also be responsible for RGCs death.Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate whether the RGCs died solely by apoptosis and autophagy in an optic nerve crush injury rat model.
