Llgnocellulose-to-ethanol conversion is a prormismg technology to supplement corn-based ethanol production.To improve the enzymatic digestibility of lignocellulosic materials, pretreatment is necessary as it alters the structure of lignocellulosic matrix, thereby making the cellulose more accessible to cellulasc enzymes during hydrolysis[1].Of the promising pretreatment technologies, alkaline pretreatment has received much attention.As an effective alkaline agent, lime is advan tageous because it is inexpensive, easily recovered, safe to handle, and compatible with oxidants[2].
