In the course of care and evaluation of thyroid function, several nursing home residents were unexpectedly found to have secondary hypothyroidism.Further laboratory evaluation of their pituitary function, revealing partial or complete hypopiruitarism.Secondary hypothyroidism has been underrecognized in elderly patients.Signs and symptoms are often subtle and varied and include visual,memory, or gait impairment, nausea, depression, and severe hyponatremia.Along with clinical features, markers of secondary hypothyroidism are a low free thyroxine along with a low or normal thyroid stimulating hormone.
