　　This is the first of two linked papers discussing the assessment and strengthening of Morshead Overpass,Burnley Viaduct,Yarra Bridge and Gardiners Creek Viaduct: four major elevated viaducts in the Southern Link section of the Melbourne CityLink toll-way.This work was carried out as part of an AUD $1.4 billion project to upgrade the M1 corridor: the busiest route in the Victorian freeway system.
