Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) has evolved over many decades and CBR is now an inclusive development strategy aimed at realisation of the rights of people with disabilities.Development of the new CBR Guidelines was a collaborative multi sectoral effort between WHO, other UN Agencies and many CBR organisations from around the world. The collaborative and multisectoral approach reflects the necessary ingredients to achieving inclusion of people with disabilities in communities.A key aspect of the evolution of CBR has been the change from being focused on individuals and households to now, where CBR is also focused on local communities and addresses the barriers that prevent inclusion. However, how do CBR programmes grow and develop to achieve this wider focus? This presentation will draw upon experiences from across the region and share practical approaches to identification of barriers and steps to address them.It will also consider the skills required within CBR programmes to support this approach.
