Glyoxylate carboligase (GCL) belongs to a family of enzymes that require thiamin diphosphate (ThDP) for their catalytic activity. It catalyses the condensation of two molecules ofglyoxylate to form tartronate, semialdehyde and CO2.Unlike other members of the ThDP dependent family,GCL lacks an essential conserved glutamate and has instead valine (V51′) in the expected glutamate position.
