Plasma spraying technique is one of the key techniques for remanufacturing, however, its inevitable that there are residual stresses in the thermal spraying coatings, and residual stresses will take great influence to the performance of the products.Moiré interferometry,as a method of whole-field displacement/strain measurements, could offer high sensitivity and large measurement range. In this paper, residual stresses along the thickness within supersonic plasma spray NiCrBSi coatings were measured using moiré interferometry method. One straight cut was through the specimen along the thickness, followed by measurement of strain field produced by relaxation of the pre-existing stress field. Moreover,in order to comparing with that results, residual stresses on the coating surface were measured by the X-ray residual stress measurement method. We validated measurements made with moiré interferometry method,by using non-destructive diffraction data obtained from the same weld before cutting. This allows a comparison to be made and excellent agreement between the results from the two methods is seen. The results indicated that moiré interferometry method is a powerful novel technique to obtain an accurate residual stress field.
