Foreign DNA in cytoplasm is a danger signal and can trigger various immune responses to protect host from infections.In presence of microbial or self DNA in the cytoplasm of mammalian cells,the DNA sensor cGAS produces cGAMP as a second messenger to activate its adaptor STING,which leads to the expression of type-Ⅰ interferons.
