Methyl salicylate (MeSa) is a stress hormone released by plants under attack by pathogens or herbivores.MeSa has been shown to attract predatory insects of herbivores and repel pests.The neuromodulators and neural circuits mediating the complex responses of these animals to MeSa remain to be defined.Here we found that the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans exhibits a strong avoidance toward MeSa, which requires the activities of two closely related neuropeptide receptor genes npr-1 and npr-2.Genetic analyses indicate that npr-1 and npr-2 act in the RMG inter/motor neurons and the AIZ interneurons, respectively, to synthetically regulate the MeSa avoidance behavior.
