Design and development of developable surface are important problems in engineering fields such as automobile industry,shipbuilding industry,sheet-metal processing,garment design and so on.The solution is usually to design developable surface according to actual requirement of engineering.The paper deals with the principle of one-parameter plane family envelope for designing developable surface.Three methods of designing developable surface are presented based on the principle.They are designing developable surface based on one curve on it and its normal line,designing developable surface based on two curves on it and designing developable surface based on one curve and one surface.They meet the common requirements of engineering fields.Then the paper presents the digital method of development for designed developable surface based on the principle of intrinsic geometry.It gives mathematical model of development through discretization of developable surface and digital result of development is obtained directly.The method makes it easy to develop developable surface and gives basis for CAD of development of developable surface in engineering fields.The method of design and development of developable surface is actually a new solution of making complex surface developable and developing it.For example,the developable surface can be obtained between two curves on a complex surface and approximates to the surface according to the second method mentioned above.Using this method,3D garment basic pattern is made developable and developed into plane pattern.The results show that it meets the requirement of industrial design.The method can be widely used in lots of engineering fields.
