Gigantopterid is a group consisting of a number of enigmatic fossil plants with angiosperm-like leaves and reticulate venation.Gigantopterid plants were very typical and abundant in the Late Palaeozoic Cathaysian floras. However,in China, their oldest occurrence was much later than in North America (Artinskian) and Indonesia (Asselian to Sakmarian). Here we present a gigantopterid Gigantonoclea cf.mira from the basal Permian strata (Asselian) of the North China Block, representing the oldest known unequivocal gigantopterid.
