The level of natural radioactivity in some environmental samples such as water, sediment and shore samples from Qaroun lake - A1 Fayioum Governate,Egypt were measured.Concentrations of radionuclides in samples were determined using y-ray spectrometer HpGe detector situated in a low background environment with a copper inner-plated passive lead shield.Energy and efficiency calibration of the detector have been done with the standard sources supplied by the international atomic energy agency (IAEA).Based on the characteristic spectral peaks of the radionuclides 232Th,238U and 40K the activity concentration were determined in Bq/Kg dry weight. The collected water samples results showed that the activity concentration ranged from 0.88±0.63 t0 3.53±1.86,0.184±0.02 to 4.97±1.58 and 1.075±0.03 to 43.74±2.87 Bq/Kg for 232Th,238U and 40K respectively. In case of sediment,2mm meshed samples were transferred to plastic containers of specific geometry similar to ascertain secular equilibrium. The activity concentration ranged from 1.43±0.07 to 20.04±3.8,2.847±0.04 to 30.15±7.08 and 21.04±1.13 to 351.88±4.02 for 232Th,238U and 40K respectively, and shore samples the activity concentration wee ranged from 1.43±0.13 to 3.27±1.3,2.847±1.2 to 6.42±2.13 and 21.04±5.17 t0 71.29+2.28 Bq/Kg for 232Th,238U and 40K respectively. The present data were compared with data obtained from different lakes. The Radium equivalent activity, dose rate, effective dose rate and external hazard index were calculated. The value of effective ose is much less than level of 1.0 mSv.y-1 recommended by ICRP.The data presented will use as baseline for radionuclide concentration in the studied area and also to establish a radiological hazard program with a map of radioactivity background levels in the surrounding environment. The recorded data of the background radioactivity levels in the investigated samples can be used as a reference to assess any changes in the studied area.
