My interest in hepatology began when I was a medical resident in Hong Kong. While I had some exposure to research as a resident, the seeds of my research career were planted in London during my fellowship with the late Dame Sheila Sherlock and Professor Howard Thomas.Choosing hepatitis B as my research focus was natural because hepatitis B was the most common liver disease in Hong Kong, hepatitis C was an enigma called non-A,non-B hepatitis, and not much was known about non-alcoholic fatty liver disease at that time.
