BACKGROUND:Modern study have shown that stress gives rise to disorder of endocrine secretion andimmune system. In particular, the hypothalamus ‐ pituitary ‐ adrenal axis dysfunction, reducedlymphocyte proliferation, macrophage function of reduced.OBJECTIVE:To explore the effects of the herbal medicine Qishen Fukang Capsules on the neuroendocrineimmunological functions of rats under depression and irradiation.DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING:A randomized, controlled, animal study was performed at Laboratory of Xian Jiao tongUniversity School of Medicine, Department of Basic Medical, china from June 2010 to August 2011.MATERIALS:Qishen Fukang capsule, composed of astragalus root, gen‐seng, Atractylodes macrocephaia, gastrodiae rhizoma, medlar, prepared rhizome of rehmannia, White Paeony Root, colla corii asini, HerbaEpimedii, wild jujube, high aspiration, tuckahoe etc.METHODS:60 SD male rats were divided randomly into five groups:the control group, the model group, and three herbal groups including small dose, medium dose, large dose (0.3g, 0.6g, 1.0g.kg‐1). The tailsuspension test was performed on rats underwent irradiation. The function of thehypothalamic‐pituitary‐adrenal axis (HPA) was measured using radioactive immunoassay. Changes in theimmune function and the regulating effects of Qishen Fukang capsules were studied.RESULTS:Observed on rats under depression and irradiation were functional accentuation of the HPA;degradation of the splenic lymphoproliferative response and IL‐2; and degradation of the englobementfunctions of peritoneal macrophage and IL‐1. The medium and large dose qishen Fukang capsulesgroups were observed to suppress the excitability of the HPA and to elevate the immune functions ofrats under depression and irradiation. Data from the herbal group and the model group werestatistically different (P < 0.05).CONCLUSIONS:Qishen Fukang capsules are demonstrated to have significant regulating effects on theneuroendocrine immunological functions of rats under depression and irradiation.
