The peach(Prunus persica)anthocyanin pathway is controlled by an activation complex, requiring an R2R3 MYB,termed MYB10.Analysis of the peach genome reveals that there are 6 copies of this gene in two chromosomal locations. In red foliaged ornamental peaches the control of leaf colour is via mis-regulation of one of these genes,PpMYB10.4.In contrast, peach skin colour appears to be controlled by either PpMYB10.1 and/or PpMYB10.3(Rahim et al 2014).We have examined the blood-fleshed(BL)phenotype of peach. It was found that PpMYB10.1 was upregulated in these cultivars, which then drives increases in anthocyanin levels. However, the causative gene for blood-flesh was found to be a NAC transcription factor.NAC transcription factors regulate the promoter of the PpMYB10.1 gene,in a complex cascade involving activation and repression. These results from peach show how anthocyanin levels can be controlled by tissue, developmental and environmental switches, with implications for other plant species.
