Acetogens of diverse ecosystems respond differently to H2CO2 or formate substrate

  Acetogens are a group of bacteria capable of converting synthetic gases(H2/CO2 and/or CO)to acetate,ethanol,and other chemicals via acetyl-CoA pathway.We enriched acetogenic bacteria from waste activate sludge,freshwater sediment,anaerobic methanogenic sludge,and cow manure using H2/CO2 and formate as substrates.Diverse acetogenic bacteria were found in waste activated sludge and cow manure.The major putative acetogenic species belonged to Clostridium spp.,Sporomusamalonica and Acetoanaerobiumnoterae in waste activated sludge,and those were Clostridium spp.,Treponema azotonutricium and Oxobacter pfennigii in cow manure.Predominant putative acetogens in methanogenic sludge samples was the species Eubacterium limosum and Clostridium magnum.
