The discovery of ion channels and the development of highly sensitive methods to explore their function has opened multiple new paths for the study of human biology. While it was originally thought that ion channels and 'bioelectricity'is confined to electrically excitable tissue, such as nerve and muscle, work over the last 35 years has revealed that a multitude of different types of ion channels fulfills a wide range of tasks in the human body.
