在台灣的許多地方都可以看到如階梯狀的「階地(terrace)」地形,但其分佈形態與階數則各地不同.地形學者往往透過「對比(correlation)」,將相同時期形成的階地面串連、關連起來,藉此度量地表的變形,以及區域構造的活動特性.多年來,台灣的學者多依富田芳郎建議的架構,進行流域内、甚至流域間的區域對比.
