A strong quake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale jolted Sichuan County in southwest Mainland China on May 12, 2008 and caused the most severe natural disaster of recent decades. The devastating earthquake changed the landscape of Sichuan province. To provide reai-time information for rescue and rehabilitation plans, FORMOSAT-2 satellite images were used to monitor and evaluate the damage over several devastated regions. This paper illustrates an overview on how remote sensing tech nology can contribute significantly to natural disaster mitigation and relief efforts after natural disasters occur. The use of high-quality FORMOSAT-2 satellite imagery in monitoring post Sichuan earthquake and a quick and detailed assessment of disaster areas are discussed in brief.Effects of such disaster on the social life has also been paid much interest and analyzed critically.Future space missions of Taiwan and the prospect of remote sensing technology to combat the natural disasters are outlined.
