Prostate cancer (CaP) is the second most common cancer in men.In US, between 5% and 12.5% of men from age 60 to 79 develop CaP.In China, CaP incidence was low but has been rising in recent years.Currently, serum prostatespecific antigen (PSA) screening, while displaying high false positive and false negative rates, is still the clinical marker of choice available for CaP.This screening is the only one approved by FDA for both post-treatment monitoring of disease recurrence and, when combined with digital rectal examination, evaluation of asymptomatic men. However, better biomarkers of CaP presence and progression are needed to avoid unnecessary invasive treatments, predict disease course, and develop more effective therapy options. The biomarker selection criteria recently proposed by NIH/NCI indicate that the marker should be cancer specific and detectable in an easily accessible biological fluid.
