This paper focused on the lake eutrophication and algal succession problems.Four main lake region (main West Lake,Yue Lake,Beili Lake and Xili Lake) of the West Lake were sampled in the late autumn of 2012,then analyzed for nitrogen and phosphorus species and chlorophyll-a indicators.Artificial climate chamber was used to simulate the nitrogen input scenario,to study the effect of ammonia and nitrate addition on the algal growth of the four different lake region. The results showed that the water quality of the West Lake is good with TP and ammonia, but TN is the main cause of pollution during the study period; only Beili Lake (TN=0.72 mg/L) meet the requirement for the class Ⅲ of National Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water (GB3838-2002); and the algae in Beili Lake was found to be the most sensitive to both ammonia and nitrate addition, whose algal biomass (in the form of chlorophyll-a) increased by 5-fold and 7-fold respectively, after the addition of the same level in the environment. Therefore,it is especially important to pay more attention on this lake region during the algal bloom sensitive period of increasing temperature in late spring and early summer.
