A novel method for producing nanoparticles by flame synthesis using a flash-boiling spray is proposed. In detail,a mixed solution(consisting of precursor and low-boiling-point solvent)is injected through an injector into an ambient at lower pressure. The injected solution is evaporated rapidly by flash-boiling and forms a homogeneous vapour.Nanoparticles are then generated from the vapour by combustion at high flame temperature. The growth process of TiO2 nanoparticles associated with the proposed method was experimentally investigated. In this experiment,a mixed solution of titanium tetraisopropoxide(TTIP)and cyclohexane was used as the precursor solution for generating nanoparticles. The flow rate of nitrogen carrier gas was changed to investigate the influence of flame-residence time of the TiO2 nanoparticles on the characteristics of the nanoparticles. Moreover,to investigate the sintering process of the TiO2 nanoparticles, the distance from the burner at which the nanoparticles were trapped and collected("nanoparticle trapping distance," hereafter)was changed. The properties of the nanoparticles, namely, particle shape, chemical composition, and distribution of particle diameter, were investigated by scanning electron microscope,X-ray diffraction, and particle-distribution analyser. The results of these investigations show that as nitrogen-carrier-gas flow rate increases, particle diameter decreases(because of short particle flame-residence time)and that the diameter of the nanoparticles is increased by decreasing the nanoparticle trapping distance.
